Gotta Scan 'Em All: We Turned Scrub Caps Into a Collectable Game

Every Medicus QR cap is now collectable. Scan a colleague's cap to catch its pattern and shape, earn badges, and climb a friendly leaderboard. Meet Cap-Dex.

The Short Version

Cap-Dex turns every QR-coded Medicus cap into something you can collect. Scan a cap and its shape and pattern join your personal Cap-Dex. There is no sign-up and no password: your own cap is your collector account. The rarer the print, the bigger the catch.

Every Cap Is Now Collectable

A single hospital already runs hundreds of different cap designs across its theatres. So we asked a simple question. Why not make spotting them a game? That is Cap-Dex. Every Medicus cap with a QR code is now a collectable. Scan one and you catch two things from it: its shape and its pattern. Both land in a personal collection that lives on your phone.

The more colleagues you scan, the closer you get to completing your Cap-Dex. It is a friendly race to spot every design on the ward.

How It Works

There is nothing to sign up for. Claiming your own cap once is the whole setup.

  1. Claim your own cap. Scan the QR code on a cap you own and claim it. That single action is your identity. The claim token saved on your device becomes your collector account. No email. No password.
  2. Scan any cap you spot. Tap "📷 Scan a cap" on the Cap-Dex page to open a live rear-camera scanner that works in Safari on iPhone. Or open any cap page and tap "Add to your Cap-Dex".
  3. Catch it. Each scan adds that cap's shape and pattern to your collection. Already have it? You will see "✓ You already had that one." Duplicates never count against you.
  4. Earn badges and climb. As your collection grows, badges unlock and your rank on the leaderboard rises.

Two Things You Collect

Cap-Dex tracks your collection along two axes, and a single scan can add to both.

Shapes

The cap style. Crown, Bouffant, Pony, Hijab and more, eleven in total. Every cap has a shape, so these form the steady backbone of any collection.

Patterns

The printed designs. More than 160+ are in the system already, from seasonal prints to ward favourites. Plain solid colours do not count. Only the proper designs earn a place.

Rarity Is Live and Honest

Rarity here is not for show. It is calculated from how many of each design are actually in circulation, and it shifts as stock changes.

  • Common — plenty out there.
  • Uncommon — a little harder to track down.
  • Rare — you will not see these often.
  • Legendary — almost none in the wild.

Because so many prints are genuinely scarce, the system skews toward Legendary. That is deliberate. Hunting down an unusual ward design should feel like a real find rather than a participation prize. Tiles are colour-coded by tier, running green through blue to gold, so you can read your collection at a glance.

Badges to Earn

A starter set of achievements gives you something to chase from your very first scan.

  • 🎣 First Catch — collect your first cap.
  • 🥉 Collector → 🥈 Avid Collector → 🥇 Master Collector — reach 10, 25 and 50 caps.
  • 🎨 Pattern Hunter — collect 10 different patterns.
  • 🧢 Shape Shifter — collect every shape.
  • Legendary Catch — bag your first Legendary.

The Leaderboard

The leaderboard ranks collectors by the number of distinct caps they have caught. That rewards breadth rather than luck, so the most dedicated spotters rise to the top instead of whoever happened to scan a Legendary on day one. It lists the leading collectors by first name only, because privacy comes first, and it always shows your own position. Picture a line like "You're #4,021 of 52,184" and the quiet urge to move up it.

Why We Built It This Way

Cap-Dex runs entirely on information we already hold. Shapes come from the cap style. Patterns come from the fabric design. Rarity comes from live stock levels. There is nothing extra to maintain, which is exactly why a piece of workwear could become a social game without adding a single task for the people making the caps.

Three things make it click:

  • Zero friction. No accounts and no passwords. Your cap is your login.
  • A reason to look up. An everyday item becomes a shared game across a team, a department, or a whole hospital.
  • Quietly curated. Behind the scenes our team tidies the taxonomy, merges duplicate pattern names, locks rarities and edits badges from a simple admin tool, so the collection stays accurate as new designs ship.
