How to customise a scrub cap
Every Medicus cap is cut, sewn and personalised to order by our own team in Sheffield, so nothing is sitting on a shelf waiting for a name. Customising one takes three choices, and all three happen inside the listing.
Choose your fit and size
Printed caps come in eight fits: Bandana, Captain, Duchess, Crown, Bouffant, Pony, Turban and Surgical Hood. Sizes run XS to 2XL. The sizing guide covers heads from under 51cm to over 65cm.
Add your personalisation
Add a name and role, a logo, a vinyl design, satin lining, a Flux Peak or an ID band. Most of these are picked as options on the cap itself, so there's nothing extra to buy separately.
Embroidery, vinyl or printed fabric: which should you choose?
There are three ways to put something personal on a scrub cap. Each one suits a different kind of design, so it's worth picking the right one before you order.
Embroidery
Best for: Names, roles, departments and simple logos.
How it's made: Stitched into the fabric on our own machines.
Price: As an add-on to a cap: from £6 for text, from £9 for a logo or detailed design, digitising included.
Vinyl transfer
Best for: Photos, gradients, fine detail and full-colour artwork.
How it's made: Printed and heat-pressed onto the cap in our Sheffield workshop.
Price: Shown in the cap options as you build it.
Custom printed fabric
Best for: Repeating patterns, team prints, or a design that covers the whole cap.
How it's made: Your design is printed onto the fabric, then cut into your chosen fit.
Price: Priced as a whole cap on each listing.
Not sure? Embroidery is the choice for anything that needs to be read, like a name. Vinyl is the choice for anything that needs to be seen in detail, like a photo. Printed fabric is for when the design is the cap.
Personalised scrub caps with your name and role
A name and role is the most popular thing we add, and it's the reason most people customise a cap in the first place. Once a theatre team is gowned and masked, faces are hard to read, and the name on the cap does the introducing. Custom scrub caps with your logo
A practice, hospital, department or team logo can be embroidered or printed. There's no minimum order for logos, and digitising your artwork for the embroidery machine is included in the price. Simple logos with a handful of colours look best stitched. Detailed crests, gradients and photographic logos come out sharper in vinyl. Send us what you have and we'll tell you which will work better.

Custom scrub caps with a photo or your own artwork
For a photo, a pet, a drawing or anything in full colour, vinyl is the way to go. Upload your own image, or pick from a library of over 100 million graphics and illustrations through our partnership with Freepik. We print and press everything in-house. Vinyl transfers on their own ship the same day, and most vinyl orders on caps ship within 24 to 48 hours.
If you want your design to be the fabric itself, choose all-over custom printed fabric, or specific placement printing to put a logo or artwork in one exact spot. The custom printed Mullet uses your print on the crown with a plain band and back. Custom printed fabric takes about a week.
Finishing touches
Once the name or design is sorted, these options change how the cap wears and works. All of them are added in the options on any cap.
- Satin lining. A smooth black or silver satin inner for hair that doesn't get on with cotton. Satin's weave is smoother than plain cotton, which is why it's kinder to hair, and we explain the difference here. The lining is polyester and water resistant, so it's also a popular choice with dentists and teams working around aerosols.
- Flux Peak. A small peak that cuts glare from the lights above you. It fits the Bandana, Captain, Crown, Duchess, Bouffant and Pony.
- ID band. A bold coloured band around the cap, so a role or department reads across the room.
- RFID tags. Sewn in for teams that already run RFID scanners, to track where a cap has been and how often it's been washed. The tags are laundry approved for 200+ washes.
- Bunny and animal ears. Small fabric ears on the crown in matching fabric, popular in paediatric and veterinary settings.
- Colour Me In. A cap printed with outlines to colour in with washable fabric markers, then wash out and start again. A favourite on children's wards.
Custom scrub caps for teams and departments
Teams usually pick one print or colour and add each person's name and role, so the whole department matches and everyone can still be told apart. We can also use colour or an ID band to separate roles across a theatre.

Can I put my name on a scrub cap?
Yes. Any Medicus scrub cap can have your name, role or both embroidered on it. Add the text as an option on the cap listing, and the preview shows how it will look before you order.
How much does it cost to personalise a scrub cap?
It depends on whether you're adding an option to a cap or buying a customised cap outright. As an add-on, embroidery starts from £6 for text and from £9 for a logo or more detailed design, with digitising included. Printed caps start from £18.95. Should I choose embroidery or vinyl?
Choose embroidery for names, roles and simple logos. It's stitched into the fabric and is the most hard-wearing option. Choose vinyl for photos, gradients and full-colour artwork that embroidery can't reproduce.
Can I add my hospital or department logo?
Yes. There's no minimum order for logos, and we digitise your artwork for the embroidery machine as part of the price. Bulk discounts start from 10 caps.
Can I put a photo on a scrub cap?
Yes. Photos are printed as a full-colour vinyl transfer and pressed onto the cap. You can also have a photo or pattern printed as the fabric itself with our custom printed fabric caps.
How long does a custom scrub cap take to make?
Orders can be ready as soon as the same day, depending on order size and volume, and most are completed within 24 to 48 hours. More customisation takes longer, and custom printed fabric takes about a week.
How should I wash an embroidered scrub cap?
Wash at 60°C, following NHS workwear guidance. Embroidery holds up well to repeated washing, but higher temperatures shorten the overall life of any cap, so stick to 60°C where you can. The care guide has the details.
