How Many Scrub Caps Do I Need?
Most full-time theatre staff need 3 to 5 reusable scrub caps. That gives you a clean cap ready for every shift while others are being washed, dried and rested. Our guidance has long been that each healthcare worker should keep at least three to four caps in rotation; busy full-time staff are usually most comfortable at four or five.

The simple rule
You should change into a clean scrub cap for each shift and wash it afterwards at a minimum of 60°C. So the number you need depends on two things: how many shifts you work between laundry loads, and how long your wash-and-dry turnaround takes. Build in one or two spares so a delayed wash never leaves you without a clean cap.
Rotation maths
Use the table below to find your number. "Wash turnaround" means the time from taking a cap off to having it clean, dry and ready again.
| Shifts per week | Wash turnaround | Caps needed (incl. spares) |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 (part-time / bank) | 1–2 days | 2–3 |
| 3–4 | 1–2 days | 3–4 |
| 5 (full-time) | 1–2 days | 4–5 |
| 5+ with back-to-back days | 2–3 days | 5+ |
The logic is straightforward: if you wear one cap per shift and your wash turnaround is a day or two, you need enough caps to cover the shifts that fall before your earliest cap is clean again — plus a spare for the days laundry slips.
Different situations
Part-time and bank staff
If you work one or two shifts a week, two to three caps is usually plenty. You will always have a clean one ready and a spare in reserve, even if you do not run a wash between every shift.
Students and trainees
Nursing and theatre students on placement follow the same hygiene logic as qualified staff: a clean cap per session, washed at 60°C afterwards. Three caps is a sensible starting point — one in use, one in the wash, one ready — and easy to scale up as placement days increase.
Long hair and specific styles
If you have long, thick or voluminous hair, the right style matters as much as the number. Larger and adjustable fits — such as XL and 2XL sizes, or an adjustable-tie bouffant style — are designed to contain more hair comfortably. Satin-lined options also help protect curls and delicate hair textures. You still need the same 3 to 5 in rotation; just choose a size that holds your hair securely. See our sizing guide to pick the right fit.
Why a small rotation pays off
Reusable cotton caps are built to last — on average a Medicus scrub cap lasts 3 to 5 years with proper care, and many last longer. A rotation of four or five caps therefore covers years of shifts from a single one-off purchase, rather than the constant repurchasing that disposables demand. UK staff who launder their own work caps at home may also be able to claim tax relief on uniform laundering (a flat-rate expense of £125 a year applies to many NHS clinical roles — check your eligibility via the gov.uk service).
Not sure where to start?
If you are kitting out yourself or a whole team, the easiest way to choose styles and sizes is to handle them first.
